Case Study
Medical Monitor for Sleep Apnea
Acumen Instruments Corporation developed a custom data recorder for a leading medical services
company. Based on the Iomega Zip drive and DataBridge technology, the device, used for at-home
sleep studies, serves as a cost-competitive replacement for the analog tape recorders the company
previously employed.
Doctors send these monitors home with patients, who record their breathing patterns while sleeping.
Patients return the recorder to their doctor, who then sends a disk to Acumen's customer for analysis.
A complete solution.
Acumen assisted the firm in prototype design and testing, the FDA device approval process, software
development, and resolving manufacturing issues, such as enclosure design and cost reduction.
Improved profitability.
Using Acumen's data recording system, a technician can arrive at a diagnosis in 15-30 minutes. Using
analog tape, data analysis by trained personnel took about 8 hours. Since the customers revenues come
exclusively from diagnosis services, the company has been able to increase productivity and profit
significantly using Acumen's system.
DataBridge technology makes it possible.
The digital recording system is based on a DataBridge chip customized for recording audio data and
signals from other sensors.
Acumen's technologies and expertise made this project a success for the analysis firm, the doctors, and
their patients.
